Broadway Furniture in Tigard sells lots of mattresses. And through the years (lots and lots of years), there is a consistent question we get from our customers: How often should you rotate your mattress?
Generally speaking, mattresses should be rotated at least every six months for maximum longevity and comfort. This means rotating our mattresses 180 degrees so that what was once the end of the bed is now the head of the bed.
Keep in mind, though, that some mattress manufacturers recommend a shorter or longer interval. In other words, it may make more sense for you to rotate your mattress every three months or even just once a year.
The important thing is to make sure it gets rotated every year. There are a few wrinkles, however. So the answer to the question of how often to rotate a mattress is: It depends!
The answer often varies depending on the style of mattress, how often the bed is slept in, and the materials the mattress is made out of. Older mattresses may need to be rotated more often than newer ones, too.
There are many different types of mattresses, so it’s a good idea to know what you’re dealing with before you begin. Is it an innerspring mattress, a memory foam mattress, a side mattress, or a hybrid mattress? Is there a comforter layer?
How much wear and tear do you see? Did you just buy a mattress, or is it an older one? If it’s old, do you always sleep in the same spot?
Important note: If your mattress is double-sided, you’ll want to consider flipping a mattress in addition to rotating it. Be careful when you flip the whole bed, though, especially if you have a heavy mattress or if you’re trying to flip a memory foam. Get help to rotate or flip the bed.
The question of how often to rotate a mattress is a good one. It speaks directly to a fundamental aspect of all good furniture care. We all want our furniture to last as long as possible — and to be as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. Thus, it’s important to learn the best tricks-of-the-trade.
One way to preserve your mattresses’ comfiness factor as well as extend its useful life is to get in the habit of rotating it from time to time. So pay attention to your manufacturers’ recommendations for when and how often to rotate the bed.
