Wall beds have a far different design than your typical bed, and thus the shopping process for the mattress has its own specifications. They are a great option for those with smaller bedrooms or apartments, you just need to do a bit of research beforehand.

So here are some tips on how to choose the best mattress for your wall bed:

Get the correct measurements

Measuring for a wall bed mattress can be slightly tricky. For most mattresses, you just need the measurements for the length and width. With the wall bed, you also need to measure the height (i.e. the  thickness), as it must be thin enough to fit when you fold it up.

When you calculate the height, be sure to measure all the way to the very top of the mattress (at its highest and thickest point), not just the stitching on the side. This is another area people overlook which leads to complications.

Consider the different types of support

You have several options for the type of mattress you want (not just the brand name). For one, remember that a wall bed does not come with a box spring, so the comfort will come from the top of the mattress.

Some of your choices include innerspring mattresses, which are amongst the most popular options. Since wall beds don’t have a box spring, many customers choose memory or foam gel mattresses, which can fit easily as you fold up the bed. Some people even choose to use air mattresses, as you won’t have to worry at all about the fit.

Each type of mattress has its own benefits, and the best choice will be dependent upon your comfort needs.

How often will the bed be used?

One important thing about memory and gel foam is that they have a tendency to slump if they aren’t used. Here’s our suggestion: if you plan on using the bed yourself, and it will be folded and unfolded almost every night, then memory or gel is a great option. If it’s for a guest, you might want to consider an inner-coil mattress. However, a memory or gel mattress can still work for infrequent use, just unfold and give it time to expand again before your guest comes.
